A public company talks extensively about earnings report results in an earnings call which is in the form of a teleconference. Nowadays, most earnings report conference calls are open to the public, not just to investors. Anyone can access the conference calls on a company’s investor relations website. Indirectly, many people may own shares in a company through their pension, mutual fund, or 401k.
You can find schedules for upcoming earnings calls and other conference calls in the stock research section on your broker's website or on Yahoo! finance. The transcripts of the earnings call are made available on the web either by the public company itself or a third party website such as Seeking Alpha.
Why You Care
It is a great chance to review the management's attitude as they deliver the call. Details of the company’s business performance is already made public in the earnings report. However, the earnings call gives a glimpse into the management of the public company for investors. Pay attention to the tone and confidence, or lack thereof, by the management. Also, certain Wall Street financial analysts will get to ask questions on the earnings call to better understand how the company is did and will do in the coming quarter.
